What is The Barkan Method?
The Barkan Method is a style of Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is the physical form of yoga designed to bring balance and well-being into your life. It is the perfect lifetime fitness program and totally different from any other kind of exercise.
We strengthen and stretch all areas of the body, which helps to quiet the mind, and nourish the soul. The movements of The Barkan Method reach deep into the tissue, relieve tension and stress, revitalize and assist in overcoming many physical and emotional problems, such as sciatica, back and neck problems, and depression.
What differentiates The Barkan Method from Bikram or other forms of Hot Yoga?
The Barkan Method is built on many of the poses and philosophies of Bikram Choudhury and Bishnu Ghosh, but integrates postures from other styles of yoga. Jimmy Barkan has been teaching yoga since 1981. He has found that even though consistency is important to measure results, daily variations are necessary to challenge, excite and help students become unlimited in their practice. There are many alignment differences between Barkan & Bikram as well: Barkan does not believe in “Locking the Knee” and crunching into the lower back!!
How hot is Hot Yoga?
The room is intentionally hot. It is heated to warm your muscles, prevent injuries and allow for a deeper release in your body. Sweating will also help flush toxins and poisons from your body. In Barkan studios we heat the room to 95-100 degrees.
What if I’m not flexible?
A perceived sense of inflexibility is the most common hindrance that prevents people from trying yoga. Yoga, and in particular The Barkan Method, is not about how flexible you are; it is about stretching your body, quieting the mind, and healing the soul. The more inflexible you are, the more you need yoga. You become flexible by doing yoga.
What if I’ve never practiced yoga? Do you offer beginner yoga classes?
Most of the classes on the schedule are beginner friendly and our instructors will help new students by offering modifications, encouragement and support. You do not need any experience; you do not need to be “in shape”; you just need a willing mind and the desire to change your life forever.
Will I lose weight and get a good workout doing yoga?
Yes. To put it simply, yoga is a great workout. The poses in the class require strength, and balance, which means as you attempt them you will be working virtually every major muscle group in the body. The sequencing and flow of the poses offers an aerobic component to the yoga class that will elevate the heart rate throughout the practice. The classroom setting allows you to set a level of intensity that suits your style and your goals.
How often should I practice yoga?
There are no set rules on how often a student should practice yoga. We recommend coming a minimum of 2-3 times a week for the body to begin to develop muscle memory. If you are looking to make a real impact on your body in terms of your conditioning, strength, muscle tone, or weight, you should consider coming 4 or 5 times a week. Because of the low impact nature of the yoga practice, the body does not require days of rest like it does with weight training and other high impact activity.
Is yoga hard?
Yoga is challenging in many ways. You are learning to have a balance of strength, flexibility and concentration. In the beginning, you will be challenged by the poses simply because you are learning a combination of unfamiliar movements. As you gain experience, you will find that you will want to challenge yourself and work to deepen in each of the postures. If you come without unreasonable expectations from yourself and the class you are likely to find the challenge rewarding and fulfilling.
How long are yoga classes? Can I leave early?
