About The Barkan Method
The History
The Barkan Method is a style of Hatha Yoga rooted in a lineage that originated in Calcutta, India. Jimmy Barkan, founder and owner, was originally certified through Ghosh’s College of India under Bikram Choudhury, and went on to become Bikram Yoga’s most senior teachers in the late 1980s.
While deeply connected to this traditional lineage, the Barkan Method has evolved to integrate postures and principles from other styles of yoga. This evolution creates greater versatility, improved range of motion, and a more well-rounded practice for today’s practitioner.
The Barkan Method features two distinct class styles: Barkan Hot Yoga and Barkan Hot Vinyasa…both following structured sequences designed to systematically develop strength, flexibility, and focus. Barkan Hot Yoga, more similar to the traditional 26 & 2 format, places a greater emphasis on balance and precision through its series of standing postures. Barkan Hot Vinyasa follows a structured yet more fluid sequence, moving at a faster pace with an emphasis on breath, flow, and continuous movement.
The Effects
-

Physical
The yoga asanas are designed to work internally and externally. Internally, improvements to the heart, spleen, kidneys, liver, and intestines are realized through consistent practice. Externally, the joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments are all made stronger through The Barkan Method.
-

Mental
As in all forms of yoga, the mind is strengthened through the discipline of The Barkan Method, which helps to eliminate stress, depression, anxiety, and other dysfunctional mental disorders. The Barkan Method helps to create a calming of the mind, quieting of the brain’s chatter, and deep relaxation response.

Spiritual
As we strengthen the body and calm the mind, we open ourselves up for a transformational experience. The Intention behind the Barkan Method is to balance the body, quiet the mind, and nourish the soul. Our approach to Hatha Yoga creates an opening of the spine and central nervous system we call the Sushumna in Sanskrit. This opening helps the practitioner heal, find balance, and evolution!!
